  1. Water is a precious commodity that we in the lubricant industry often take for granted. The quality of water used in an industrial application is very critical, and measures are often not taken to ensure that the water is brought in at a consistently high quality.

    One technique that is used as a final step to clean wastewater is reverse osmosis (RO). In RO processes, water is forced under pressure to pass through a polymeric membrane, while all other components, including bacteria, polymers and salts, are held back (or rejected) by the membrane.

    These nanocomposite membranes contain a crosslinked matrix of polymers and super-hydrophilic nanoparticles. The addition of nanoparticles enables the RO membrane to become more hydrophilic, more negatively charged and smoother. Figure 2 shows Hoek holding a vial containing nanoparticles on the left and a piece of the nanoparticle-based RO membrane on the right.
